A man plunges a hypodermic needle into the neck of a woman at the entrance to the Third Avenue D and 149th Street station in The Hub on Sunday, December 29, 2024 in the Bronx, N.Y. The Hub, situated at the intersection of East 149th Street and Third Avenue, is one of the Bronx’s busiest shopping districts but has also emerged as an open-air drug market and a central point in the area’s fentanyl crisis. According to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Bronx residents recorded the highest overdose death rate among the 3,046 fatalities reported in 2023. Elderly resident Alice Mary Nasanga, who is about 70, holds her disabled son, Ibrahim Kamya, 30, as she feeds him on the floor of the home they share in Nabalanga, in the Western Region of Uganda, Saturday, Nov. 16, 2024. Nasanga worries who will feed her son when she is no longer able to. Nasanga is her son’s sole caretaker and gets no help from the government and little help from her grandchildren who are afraid of him. “There is no one. Only God knows,” she says of what will happen to him when she’s physically no longer able to care for him. Wealthy countries have grappled with aging societies for decades, but the issue is only now beginning to ripple in the developing world, where the idea of growing old is still new for swaths of the population. What awaits them, though, is a country wholly unprepared. Few government safety nets and pension programs exist. Medical care is lacking. (David Goldman – Associated Press)
