The earthquake and tsunami of March 11, 2011, wiped away the ancient Japanese village of Kesen. In the past decade, a small group of survivors has valiantly tried to rebuild the community, but a grim reality has set in: This emptiness will last forever. Naoshi Sato, 78, walks through debris a few weeks after the earthquake and tsunami hit the area in Kesen, a small community in Rikuzentakata City, Iwate Prefecture, Japan, April 05, 2011. More than 200 residents of Kesen were killed. All but two of 550 homes were destroyed. Most survivors evacuated Kesen and lived in evacuation centers, but 15 residents refused to abandon their town, living amid the debris without running water and electricity for months. STILL PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST JUDGES

Photography Judges are Holly Pickett, Carmine Galasso and Cecilia Bohan

Holly Pickett is a freelance photojournalist and journalist safety trainer based in New York City. She started her career as a staff photographer at The Spokesman-Review newspaper in Spokane, Wash. Her professional journalism experience spans two decades, one of which she spent as a Middle East-based freelancer–covering stories about human migration, social movements, the cost of conflict, and the challenges faced by women. She has reported from dozens of countries, including Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Gaza, Egypt, Yemen, Turkey, Lebanon, Greece, Russia, Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Sudan. Her work has appeared in many publications, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, The New Yorker, Le Monde, TIME, Stern, Paris Match, NPR.org, and The New Republic. Holly received a 2014 travel grant from the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting and was a 2018 IWMF African Great Lakes Reporting fellow in Rwanda and DRC. She is a member of the Everyday Projects and Women Photograph photo collectives. She is also a member of the IWMF’s inaugural cohort of Next Gen Safety Trainers, an initiative to make journalist safety training more contemporary, holistic, and inclusive. For the past several years, Holly has covered news and features in the New York region, while pursuing a joint master’s degree in journalism and Near Eastern studies, which she completed in June 2021 at New York University.

Carmine Galasso is a photojournalist who worked at The Record, a New Jersey newspaper, for nearly 45 years. He shot general assignments before spending a decade photographing sports locally, and across the U.S. – Super Bowls, World Series, Stanley Cups, NCAA basketball, boxing, etc.! He photographed feature stories in many countries globally, including: Malaysia, India, Israel/Palestine, Mexico, France, Northern Ireland, and Kenya.! He’s won countless awards, and is the author of the monograph, “Crosses”, published in Great Britain in 2007, by Trolley Books.which was one of PDN’s photo books of the year. Born in Brooklyn, Carmine has lived in New York City for 34 years.

Cecilia Bohan, is a Pulitzer-prize winning photo editor. She has over three decades of experience covering news, culture and sports. Her early career included the Associated Press and National Sports Daily. The majority of Cecilia’s career was spent at The New York Times and included a four year, international assignment as Director of Photography at the International Herald Tribune, headquartered in Paris. 

Although semi-retired, Cecilia continues to enjoy an active professional life as a freelance photo editor and has worked for various organizations such as the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, the U.S Open Tennis Championships, Mayo Clinic Press, and New York Times Books. 

Since 2015, Cecilia has served as president of the board of the Bronx Documentary Center, a mission-driven, community based not-for-profit focusing on documentary practice and education. In her spare time, she also participates as a juror on international photo contests. 

Cecilia holds a BA in English Literature with a minor in Fine Art Photography from Washington University in St. Louis.

MULTIMEDIA CONTEST JUDGES

Multimedia Judges Bob Sacha and Travis Fox

Bob Sacha is a director, cinematographer, editor, teacher, photographer and a collaborator on visual journalism projects. He created the video for projects that have won the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service, a National Emmy for New Approaches to News &  Documentary Programming. a Webby and the first gold medal ever given by the Society for News Design. He teamed up with Blue Chalk  as the the director of photography for the New York Times series, Living City, about  New York’s infrastructure.  BlindSight, a documentary short about a group of blind photographers that he directed, shot & produced had its world premiere at DOCNYC, the country’s largest documentary festival. He is currently an Associate Professor of Video Storytelling at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY.  His new passion and focus is 360 Video/VR and volumetric capture for journalism.

Travis Fox is the director of the Visual Journalism department at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism. Fox most recently produced films for FRONTLINE on PBS. His work has also appeared on National Geographic, Al Jazeera, and The New York Times.

From 1999 to 2009, he worked as a senior video journalist at The Washington Post and was widely recognized as a pioneer of news video on the web. He covered such major stories as the 2003 invasion of Iraq and the war in Afghanistan. In 2006, he won the first Emmy Award presented to a web video producer for his coverage of Hurricane Katrina. He was also the first person to win both the Editor of the Year and Videographer of the Year awards from the White House News Photographers Association in the same year. He has won dozens of National Press Photographers Association and Pictures of the Year International awards and has been nominated for a total of eight Emmy’s.

Fox has taught broadcast journalism at the CUNY J-School and multimedia filmmaking at Columbia University. He graduated from the Missouri School of Journalism.
